Music Skills: Trumpet Edition

Music

Age: 14–16

Time requirement: 20–60 minutes

From baroque to jazz – how do you create different moods and sounds on the trumpet? Help students explore techniques and styles of trumpet playing along with Musician Flossie Plain and Staff Sergeant Paul Mason.

Part of a toolkit of four engaging teaching resources produced with British Army Music, the Music Skills: Trumpet Edition materials help bridge the gap between KS3 Music and the Music GCSE curriculum. It is also aligned to the Scottish Nat 5 Music curriculum. All toolkit materials build key skills in instrument knowledge, music history, as well as composition and unfamiliar listening skills – each through the lens of a single instrument and with expert input from Army instrumentalists.

The Music Skills: Trumpet Edition resource reviews different styles of trumpet playing, mutes, ornamentation, vibrato and texture, unfamiliar listening and challenges students to compose an awards show theme for the trumpet. It aligns with Gatsby Careers Education Benchmarks as well as Music curriculum links and can be completed as a full-length lesson or individual elements used as starters, extension activities, homework or revision aids.
