Age: 11–16

Time requirement: assembly 20 minutes, lesson activity 20 minutes

What is VE Day? Why is it significant? Was VE Day the end of World War Two?

Help students explore VE Day through the eyes of those who were there, with source material from a range of voices, including Commonwealth soldiers, British POWs, auxiliary workers and German civilians. Discuss how and why the day has been commemorated over the years, with examples from different communities and from serving Army personnel.

Comprising an assembly and a supporting short lesson activity, the VE Day resource could be delivered as part of the History or PSHE / Health and Wellbeing curriculum, form time sessions or VE day activities.
