Applying Geographical Skills

Geography

Age: 11–16

Time requirement: 45–60 minutes per lesson

An earthquake has struck Adasi island – can students apply core geographic skills to identify the best location to base their relief efforts?

This pair of lessons review key geographic skills and apply them to a real world context, allowing students to experience the role of an Army Geographic Technician. In the first session students will develop skills in data analysis, map reading, and GIS techniques, before applying this knowledge in the second session to find the ideal location for a Forward Operating Base for an earthquake response.

This flexible resource provides options for students aged 11–14 (KS3) and 14–16 (KS4), alongside worksheets, films and presentations. The sessions support the geography curriculum and builds students’ knowledge of geographic careers, supporting the Gatsby Benchmarks for careers education.

Rally your students and prepare them for a mission they won’t forget – because with this resource, geography isn’t just a subject, it’s an expedition!
