Music Skills: Cello Edition

Music

Age: 14–16

Time requirement: 20–60 minutes

Build students' understanding of the cello with Lance Corporal Adrian Calef, one of the Army's star cellists and member of the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra.

Part of a toolkit of four engaging resources produced with British Army Music, the Cello Edition resources help bridge the gap between KS3 Music and the Music GCSE curriculum. It is also aligned to the Scottish Nat 5 Music curriculum. The toolkit materials build key skills in instrument knowledge, music history, as well as composition and unfamiliar listening skills – each through the lens of a single instrument, with expert input from Army instrumentalists.

The Music Skills: Cello Edition resource deepens understanding of the cello as a solo and ensemble instrument, builds unfamiliar listening skills and ask students to a character leitmotif for a film or play. It aligns with Gatsby Careers Education Benchmarks as well as Music curriculum links and can be completed as a full-length lesson or individual elements used as starters, extension activities, homework or revision aids.
