Ever heard the saying tidy house, tidy mind? Well, the same goes for your locker space. As a soldier in the British Army, you will undergo many inspections during your training, so it’s best to get ahead of the game and start getting used to your cupboards and shelves looking spotless.

Skills like this will help reinforce self-pride and discipline, which are essential throughout your service. Watch our step-by-step guide and get your locker organised Army style.

Soldier in front of a tidy locker

What you’ll need:

  • A set of shelves or drawers

  • A wardrobe

  • Some shirts on hangars

  • A pair of shoes

  • Other items from around your bedroom/house

Step 1 – Gather your items

Once you have collected your items, lay them out and decide where you are going to put them in your wardrobe/shelves. Follow the layout in the video for guidance, but don’t worry if you don’t have the same items, this is just to practice folding and storing things away neatly.

Step 2 – Preparation is key

Fold your t-shirts and iron your shirts, ready to be put away neatly. If you need some useful tips for this, watch our other guides such as ‘How to Fold Your T-Shirts’ and ‘How to Iron a Shirt. Make sure that your shoes and other items you’ve picked are clean. All of your kit will be inspected thoroughly, so it is good to get in the habit of cleaning things properly once they’ve been used.

Step 3 – Start sorting

You can now begin to put away your neatly folded clothes and hang up your shirts. Don’t worry about what you’re using or where you are laying it out. Not everyone will have the same kit and storage available, so just use the video as a guide. You can practice how you want to lay it out, then change it if you think you can find a neater way to do it.

Step 4 – Less is more

Although you will be given a lot of kit when you start training, you won’t need to have it out all the time. You will be told where to store things and it is good practice to only keep your essentials out, so you don’t clutter your space. As tempting as it is to have a floor-drobe with all of your clothes in a chaotic pile, things will get creased, and it will be harder to find exactly what you need in a hurry.

That’s how to organise your locker, Army style.

It doesn’t matter what you have around your room/house to organise. When you start basic training, you will be given all of your kit and shown how to lay it out. With a bit of practice now, you will find it easier to do when you get to training.

A job like no other

The Army offers you challenges and adventure that you simply can't find in any other job.
