Life in the British Army

Today's Army is a modern, highly-skilled force that tackles all kinds of missions, all over the world. Active in peace time as well as conflicts, we carry out humanitarian operations, help in emergencies, get involved in local communities and protect civilians in the UK and abroad.

How often you see friends and family very much depends on your job role in the British Army and personal choice. If you have a day to day job on base, you'll have evenings and most weekends off, so you can see friends and family as much as you like.

If you're married or have children, the Army provides subsidised housing so that your family can join you on your postings.

There's also generous annual leave that is yours to use just as you would in any other job.

A lot of jobs are now based around Garrison Camps and more than one Regiment is based there. This gives more soldiers the chance to get posted in one area for a longer period of time.

The Army isn’t forever. If you decide that the Army is not right for you, you should talk to your Commanding Officer who will be able to advise you appropriately. You will need to be Discharged As Of Right (DAOR).
