We've asked serving soldiers what they wish they’d known before joining the British Army. From Basic Training advice to choosing the right career path, watch now and pick up tips that could help you get ahead.

Let’s start with polishing boots. There is a knack to it, and it’s something that comes with time and practice. We all like shiny things, right?
Then it’s ironing. The advice? Invest in a good iron, and that’s half the battle.
Don’t stress if it isn’t something you can’t buy before you join, you won’t be the only one and there will be facilities provided you can use.
Remember, everyone arrives with different strengths - lean on your teammates for help, learn from each other and take on challenges together.
Research is key
Take your time to understand the job roles before you join. This could potentially be a career for life, or you may have the opportunity to move around once you are in, either way make sure you are invested in the responsibilities that come with your role.
Get ahead with tabbing (Tactical Advance to Battle)
If you haven’t heard of tabbing before, don’t worry. Tabbing involves moving at pace while carrying weight, and it’s a key part of Army training. If it’s something you can practise beforehand it could start you off on the right foot (pun intended) and help you feel more prepared and confident from day one.
'I struggled a lot with tabbing, put something in a bag, and go on a tab, a little jog, with some weights on, this would have helped me so much with Basic Training.'
Don’t be afraid to fail
Starting something new can feel daunting, and it’s completely normal to be nervous. Some soldiers see nerves as a positive sign.
'I think it’s good to have nerves, it shows that you care about your job and you want to progress.'
Nobody gets everything right straight away. The important thing is being willing to learn, ask questions and keep improving. Throughout your Army career, support is available whenever you need it, whether that’s from your Chain of Command, your teammates or dedicated welfare services.
Every soldier starts somewhere.
You don’t need to know everything before you join.
Do your research.
Find a role that interests you.
Give it your best.
The Army will teach you new skills, push you out of your comfort zone and give you opportunities you may never have expected.
