Thinking about becoming an Army Officer but not sure where to start?
Whether you're still exploring your options or ready to apply, this guide explains everything you need to know about becoming an Army Officer. You'll learn about the age requirements, application process, selection stages and how to prepare for success.
You'll also find advice from Army recruiters who support officer candidates every day.

Army Officers are leaders. They are responsible for leading soldiers, making decisions, solving problems and helping their teams succeed.
Officers work in a wide range of roles across the Army depending on your area of interest, including intelligence, combat, logistics, medical and more.
As an Officer, you'll receive world-class leadership training and take on real responsibility from the start of your career.
Before you get started, it’s important to know the age requirements:
You can apply from 17 years and 9 months old.
If you’re interested in an Army Scholarship, you can apply while you’re in Year 12 (Lower Sixth).
To join as an officer, you’ll need to start training at Sandhurst before your 30th birthday.
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst welcomes Officer Cadets three times a year:
January
May
September
This means there are several opportunities throughout the year to begin your training journey.
Every application is different, but most officer applications take around 6 to 12 months from start to finish.
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll be supported by two key people:
Your Candidate Support Manager - They’ll guide you through each stage of the application process, answering any questions and helping you keep everything on track.
Your Recruiter - They’ll be there to answer questions and support you as you prepare for each stage.
What happens after you apply?
The Army Officer application process usually follows several key stages.
Step 1: Initial Conversation
You'll speak with your Candidate Support Manager about the next steps in your application.
Step 2: Medical Records Check
Your medical records will be requested from your GP.
Step 3: Video Interview
You'll complete a video interview with a recruiter.
Step 4: Medical Assessment
You'll attend a face-to-face medical assessment at a selection centre.
Step 5: Army Officer Selection Board
You'll take part in the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB), which is completed in two stages.
Throughout your application, you can track your progress through your candidate portal, which includes a handy progress bar showing how far you’ve come.

Want to give yourself the best chance of success? Here’s what our recruiters recommend:
